Antique original oil on canvas painting depicting a woman wearing a kimono. Created by an unknown artist around 1880, the technique and composition is very reminiscent of the French painter Tony Robert-Fleury (1837-1911). Frame in gilded sculpted wood, in good condition, with signs of use and missing decorative parts, especially in the corners (see photos).

The influence of Japanese art on Western artists established itself at the end of the 19th century, especially during the Impressionist movement. The phenomenon came to be known as "Japonisme" as there was a sudden rise in interest in Japanese art after Japan re-commenced trade with the West in 1853, thus introducing their goods and culture to Europe. Japonisme was first used as a term by French collector and art critic Philippe Burty in 1872, as the influence of Japan on Western artists became more widespread.
